Over the past 15 years, LogServ has been implementing a strategy to optimize its locomotive fleet amid rising crude steel production. The company aims to reduce both the number of locomotives and the variety of series in operation. By selecting locomotives that are optimal for specific tasks, utilizing powerful vehicles, and standardizing equipment, LogServ seeks to improve operational efficiency and ensure maximum availability.

Acquiring suitable locomotives for shunting operations remains a complex task due to the limited number of manufacturers in the market. Meeting specific requirements such as tonnage, frequency of use, and track lengths involves navigating various challenges. Additionally, increased shunting tonnages have evolved the demands placed on locomotives over the years.

Maintenance continues to be a significant aspect of fleet management. Higher tonnages, new emission standards, and more complex control systems increase the demands on equipment upkeep to keep locomotives operational. Given the high acquisition costs for new units, optimizing the lifespan of existing locomotives is crucial for managing investment programs effectively.

Gmeinder Lokomotiven is scheduled to deliver two more locomotives to LogServ by the end of 2025, designated as 1004.09 and 1004.10. These additions will further support LogServ's fleet optimization strategy. The company is also exploring alternative propulsion systems, including testing e-fuels for older technologies and considering hybrid, dual-engine, and battery-powered options to move towards CO₂ neutrality.
