The first commercial train is expected to operate within days, following initial access tests conducted on Friday, June 7, 2025.

DB Cargo UK is preparing to launch a new intermodal service from the Port of Southampton to Maritime Transport’s newly completed rail terminal at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton.

A DB Class 66 locomotive (66117) became the first company traction to enter the Northampton Gateway site under live signalling, as part of commissioning steps ahead of formal launch. Further test runs are scheduled before operations begin.

First freight movement on new East West Rail infrastructure

The upcoming service will be the first commercial freight movement using newly delivered infrastructure under the East West Rail programme. The rail terminal at SEGRO’s 35-acre site connects directly to the West Coast Main Line via the Northampton Loop Line, following infrastructure works completed during a 54-hour possession over the Easter weekend.

The connection forms part of a broader logistics park development with planning permission for up to 464,500 m² of warehousing and distribution space. Maritime Transport was confirmed as terminal operator in mid-2022.

Site infrastructure and network integration

The intermodal terminal integrates with SEGRO’s investment plan estimated at approximately EUR 235 million for regional infrastructure in the Northampton area. These include road junction upgrades to M1 Junction 15, the A508, and A45, in coordination with National Highways, Network Rail and local authorities.

Work completed to date includes main line access, signalling integration, and provision for future multi-modal freight operations. The park is located approximately 6 km from Northampton, adjacent to the M1 corridor.

Terminal capabilities and logistics framework

The Northampton terminal is designed for regular freight operations supporting inland logistics for southern ports. Yusen Logistics will be the first warehouse tenant to establish presence within the park.

Beyond the rail infrastructure, SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton incorporates landscaping, local access upgrades, and green space initiatives. The wider project area includes over 32 hectares of amenity and parkland, an internal road network, and planting of 60,000 trees. Additional environmental and perimeter works are ongoing.

The intermodal service initiated by DB Cargo UK is positioned to support shifting containerised freight away from long-distance road haulage through a dedicated rail corridor linking the Midlands and southern coast. Test operations into the Northampton terminal are continuing this week.
