This addition comes in response to the strong demand for GBRf's initial service, which began in October 2023.

GB Railfreight (GBRf) initiated a second daily service between the Port of Felixstowe and Widnes. The new schedule increases the number of weekly trains between Felixstowe and Widnes to eleven, effectively removing approximately 500 truck movements from the UK's roads, thereby reducing congestion and enhancing road safety.

GBRf’s expanded service is set to run five additional trains each week. In 2024 alone, GB Railfreight has transported over 100,000 containers through the Port of Felixstowe, and the company aims to double this volume by the end of the year.

The service is part of a collaboration with Stobart Ports, which sees an increase in rail services at Widnes to over 50 per week. This supports a shift towards rail transport, offering final mile and storage solutions due to Widnes’ ETSF and AFSO accreditations.

The Port of Felixstowe, recognized as the busiest intermodal rail freight facility in the UK, continues to support such initiatives. The port has made significant investments to enhance its infrastructure, promoting rail as an efficient method for reducing supply chain emissions.
