Services are in disarray and delays after incident on West Coast Main Line.

The freight train derailed on Wednesday afternoon.

Network Rail says engineers are working as quickly as possible to make the line safe for passengers.

Passengers on services between Preston and Scotland have been advised by Avanti Trains not to travel. Services on the Transpennine route are also affected. Disruption is expected throughout the rest of the day.

"We apologise to passengers affected by the derailment. We have specialist repair teams at the scene working as quickly as possible to make the railway safe," said Kara Wood, Network Rail's acting route strategy director for the North West, continuing: "Disruption is expected for the rest of the day, so we're urging people to plan their journeys and check with their train operator or National Rail Enquiries before travelling."

Rail officials say work will continue throughout the day to reopen the line as soon as possible.
