At least one person was killed and around 30 injured after a train accident on Tuesday morning in Voorschoten, the Netherlands, between The Hague and Amsterdam.

The cause of the incident was the train hitting construction equipment left on the tracks, Reuters quoted Dutch emergency services as saying.

The front carriage of a night train from Leiden to Hague derailed and rolled into a field. A second carriage overturned on its side and a fire broke out in another carriage, which was quickly brought under control, the ANP news agency reported.

A spokesman for the local fire brigade told Dutch radio that 19 people injured in the accident had been taken to hospital. Some of them are in serious condition.

Dutch Railways (NS) spokesman Erik Kroeze confirmed that a freight train was involved in the accident, but gave no further details. He also gave no information on the number of people injured, according to a Reuters report.

Train services between Leiden and The Hague were temporarily suspended.
